What Is Muay Thai?
Muay Thai, commonly referred to as "The Art of 8 Limbs", is a striking sport involving punches, kicks, knees, elbows, and clinch fighting. Muay Thai, or Thai Boxing, is generally accepted as the most effective combat striking sport. It is the national sport of Thailand and this cultural martial art can be traced back all the way to the 13th century.
Why Totem Muay Thai?
Totem Muay Thai features traditional Muay Thai instruction for fitness, fighting, or just for fun. Detailed, technique-driven instruction is provided by experienced instructors and coaches in a safe, clean, and respectful environment. Totem Muay Thai training incorporates high level mobility, flexibility, cardio, strength, and conditioning that vastly improves overall levels of health and fitness.
Teen Muay Thai (13-17 y/o)
Empower your teen with the art of Muay Thai! Our beginner-friendly classes provide a safe and effective learning environment for teens aged 13-17 years old. Under the guidance of our expert instructors, your teen will learn the fundamentals of Muay Thai, including strikes, kicks, and defensive techniques.
Muay Thai offers numerous benefits for teens, such as improved physical fitness, increased self-confidence, discipline, focus, and self-defense skills.
Rest assured, safety is our top priority. Our experienced instructors provide close supervision and ensure a positive learning experience for all students.
Beginner
One-on-one, or small group instruction is provided to new students. Muay Thai fundamentals of basic stance, movement, strikes, and defenses are taught. Technical components of each are broken down and explained to assure a complete understanding and application.
Intermediate and Advanced
Techniques are practiced repetitively, through pad work, situational drilling, and sparring, in order to hone them to be precisely and effectively applied in an array of circumstances. In addition to fundamental through advanced punch, elbow, kick, and knee techniques, an emphasis is placed on clinching and clinching technique. Clinching is a critically important component of Muay Thai and can be the key factor in winning fights.
Fighters
Our instructors have successfully trained, coached, and cornered numerous fighters. Those who are eligible to fight receive specialized attention in fight preparation, conditioning, weight management, and ring tactics, from the time fight training begins until the fighter’s hand is raised in victory.
Class Schedule
Teen Muay Thai class is held Monday and Wednesday from 6:00pm-7:00pm. Classes are structured and supervised to build on the foundational techniques of Muay Thai. Teen Muay Thai members are welcome to attend Muay Thai Open Mat on Friday from 6:00pm-8:00pm.
Beginner class is held Monday and Wednesday from 6:30pm-7:00pm, afterwards beginner students are welcome to stay and drill technique.
All other students (intermediate and advanced) as well as fighters are welcome to attend any Muay Thai classes.

Instructors & Coaches
Shane Carlin
Head Instructor
Shane has over 25 years of Muay Thai experience. In the late 1990s, he began training and fighting under former professional champion Kru Ood (Sitha Phongphibool) at U.S. Muay Thai Academy. When Kru discontinued instructing, Shane joined his teammates at Cool Hearts Muay Thai, and then Pittsburgh Muay Thai. While at Pittsburgh Muay Thai he held the positions of coach, head coach, and then instructor. He has spent countless hours training, teaching, coaching, and mentoring students and fighters alike.
liam Carlin
Instructor
Liam has been training Muay Thai under his father since he was a child and has trained alongside many experienced instructors and fighters. He has trained extensively at Pittsburgh Muay Thai, where he progressed to become a conscientious and dedicated coach, cornering for multiple fighters. He has trained in Thailand at Kiatphontip Gym as well as Bangtao Muay Thai under Ajarn Wat. Liam specializes in strength, conditioning, and nutrition for combat sports and prioritizes discipline and respect as the most important tenets of martial arts.
