Totem Success Stories

Our Client-Focused Approach

Your journey begins with a one hour, one-on-one evaluation with a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT). We prioritize understanding your:

- Individual Goals: What do you want to achieve with your movement and what activities/exercises are looking to return to?

- Movement History: Past injuries, activities, and current lifestyle.

- Current Challenges: What specific movements and activities are limited or painful?

The Totem Difference: Beyond Traditional Assessment

Our movement evaluation goes deeper than just identifying issues. We assess:

- Functional Movement Patterns: How you move in everyday activities, exercises, and sport-specific movements.

- Strength and Mobility: Pinpointing asymmetries or weaknesses.

- Neuromuscular Control: How well your brain communicates with your muscles to organize movement patterns to accomplish tasks.

The Evaluation: Comprehensive and Personalized

Our DPTs utilize a variety of tools and assessment techniques, including:

- Movement Analysis: Detailed observation and assessment of your movement patterns.

- Hands-On Assessment: Manual muscle testing, joint mobility, and range of motion testing.

- Barbell Assessment: If you are a barbell athlete, we want to see how you move under a barbell! Our Doctors of Physical Therapy specialize in squat, bench, deadlift, overhead press, and Olympic weightlifting assessment.

The Rehab/Training Continuum: Where We Stand Apart

Unlike traditional rehab, Totem emphasizes early integration of training principles. We understand that you want to return to a specific activity or exercise, therefore your rehab plan should include and build capacity in those movement patterns. Rehab and training should not be thought of as two separate entities, rather they are on a continuum. This means that your rehab plan will include:

- Corrective Accessory Movements: Tailored to address specific limitations and asymmetries.

- Strength Training: Building resilience and optimizing performance in the foundational movement patterns.

- Movement Education: Empowering you with knowledge to move with confidence in life and sport.

The Rehab/Training Continuum

Your Personalized Movement Plan: A Hybrid Approach

At Totem Training and Performance, we take a hybrid, client-centered approach when it comes to executing your rehab plan.

Unlike the traditional physical therapy model, where you have 3+ sessions per week, spend 10-15 minutes with your physical therapist, and have to share your time with other clients, Totem Training and Performance works with you 1-2 times per week, completely one-on-one for a full hour. We also utilize TrainHeroic to provide custom tailored exercise programming to assist you in your progress towards your goals.

This approach allows for improved accountability outside of your in-person sessions and expedites your improvement.
